The Director:
Katy Karrenbrock has been teaching elementary
school students for the last 15 years. She is a
native of San Francisco and recently moved to
Sonoma County. Katy received her Bachelor of Arts
and teaching credential from St. Mary’s College. After
9 years of teaching full time in the classroom, she
decided to focus on teaching students with learning
disabilities. She returned to school to pursue a
Slingerland® certificate which enabled her to further
her experiences working with students with dyslexia
and mild learning differences.
The Slingerland® method is intended to meet the needs of those students who are unable to meet their academic grade expectations in a regular classroom. It gives students auditory, visual and tactile cues which helps students understand and grasp the English language phonetically in its most basic form. It gives students building blocks so reading and writing becomes less of a challenge and students are able to regain their self esteem. Students feel more confident in the classroom through improved academic work and progress.
“It is important to identify students at an early age who may struggle with a learning disability. Thus, they are able to cope and overcome their learning difference before it is too late and their self esteem is adversely affected. I was one of these students and am very grateful to my parents, teachers and tutors who were able to help me ease my academic differences and make me feel more successful about my school work.”
Katy has been a substitute teacher and private tutor for the last 6 years and has helped many students improve their academic performance. She creates individual programs to meet the needs of each of her students and keeps in close contact with their parents and educational specialists.
"The average five-year old will have spent 5,000 hours in front of the TV before entering kindergarten - longer than the time it takes to get a college degree."
-Bob Peterson, Rethinking Schools
